My chilhood hero, Hayao Miyazaki.
Childhood always get us to memorize all great, fun and happiest part of our lives, and watching animation is one of joyful tools to bring them back. Unfortunetly, animation nowdays usually like to be 'the newest technology' race. Only few of them have a consistency to the magic of childhood itself. The magic should be have high imaginations, irrational stories and of course a sincere and humility as every childhood best.
Hayao Miyazaki alongside his ghibli studios is one of few who still have a strong consistency to make a good animation production as it should be. His magical touch touched everyone who watch his works. From Kiki's delivery service to spiritted away, Hayao makes a very intimate connection to his audience.
Hayao could make a great composition in every details of what he did. The magical touch which consist great stories, sweet memmories, absurdity, future dreams mixed up with criticism especially for humanity and gender issue. Hayao and ghibli studios always have a strong attitude in every works they've made. Their research in history and culture are one of the best.
Born in Bunkyō, Tokyo, Miyazaki began his animation career in 1961, when he joined Toei Animation. From there, Miyazaki worked as an in-between artist for Gulliver's Travels Beyond the Moon where he pitched his own ideas that eventually became the movie's ending. He continued to work in various roles in the animation industry over the decade until he was able to direct his first feature film Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro which was released in 1979. While Miyazaki's films have long enjoyed both commercial and critical success in Japan, he remained largely unknown to the West until Miramax Films released Princess Mononoke. Miyazaki returned to animation with Spirited Away. It was the first anime film to win an American Academy Award.
on September 6, 2013 Miyazaki announced his retirement. It's quiet suprise after his most awaited film the wind rises was released. Miyazaki said he can no longer work 12- to 14-hour days; about seven hours is his limit, and delegating the work to others is just not his style.
“If I could have, I would have done that. But that’s not how I work,” he said. “I have to put the pencil down and just go home, You just can’t do anything about those problems resulting from aging,” he said.
Miyazaki’s success has helped keep Japan one of the world’s biggest markets for animation. His sale of worldwide distribution rights for Studio Ghibli’s works to Walt Disney Studios in 1996 helped win him a global audience. The Wind Rises begins with a compelling portrayal of the destruction and infernos set off by the 1926 Great Kanto Earthquake.
So then, what will become of Ghibli? The one person who seems to hold the key is Mamoru Hosoda. The 45-year-old director, whose filmography includes "Summer Wars" (2009) and "The Wolf Children, Ame and Yuki" (2012), is a rare breed of filmmaker who has made a series of hit films for general audiences. As Suzuki also wrote in his book, "Maro (Hiromasa Yonebayashi's nickname) and Goro are, of course, Miyazaki's disciples, but Mamoru Hosoda borrows (expressions) from a variety of movies.
Whoever person will take on charge in Ghibi studios should keep the spirits and the magical things that Miyazaki did since 1985. His legacy should be kept in every ghibli productions, because he should be lots of people childhood heroes, including myself.
